Overview

Secretory pituitary tumours cause symptoms depending on the hormone produced, such as prolactin, growth hormone or ACTH.

Symptoms

  • Irregular periods, breast milk discharge or low sex drive (prolactin)
  • Enlarged hands, feet and face (growth hormone)
  • Weight gain, high blood pressure and easy bruising (ACTH)
  • Headaches and vision changes

Causes and risk factors

The cause is usually unknown. Some inherited conditions increase the risk.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis uses hormone blood tests and MRI of the pituitary.

Treatment

Treatment includes medicines, surgery through the nose and radiotherapy.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for unexplained hormone symptoms or headaches with vision changes.
