Overview

SARS spread from person to person and caused severe pneumonia. No cases have been reported since 2004, but lessons from SARS shaped responses to later outbreaks.

Symptoms

  • High fever
  • Dry cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Muscle aches and headache
  • Pneumonia

Causes and risk factors

It is caused by the SARS coronavirus and spreads through respiratory droplets and close contact.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis uses laboratory tests and chest imaging.

Treatment

Treatment is supportive care, including oxygen and breathing support.

When to see a doctor

Seek care for high fever and breathing difficulty, especially after travel or contact with a sick person.
