Overview
Shingles usually affects one side of the body. Early treatment can reduce symptoms and complications.
Symptoms
- Burning, tingling or pain in one area
- A rash of blisters in a band on one side of the body
- Fever and headache
- Lingering nerve pain after the rash heals
Causes and risk factors
Anyone who has had chickenpox can get shingles. Risk increases with age and a weak immune system.
Diagnosis
A doctor diagnoses it by examining the rash.
Treatment
Treatment includes antiviral medicines, ideally within three days of the rash, and pain relief. A vaccine is available for older adults.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor promptly if you think you have shingles. Seek urgent care if the rash is near the eye.
