Overview

Skin cancer is mostly caused by sun damage. Melanoma can spread to other organs, so early detection is important.

Symptoms

  • A new mole or a change in an existing mole
  • A mole with an irregular border, multiple colours or larger than 6 mm
  • A sore that does not heal
  • Itching or bleeding of a mole
  • A dark streak under a nail

Causes and risk factors

Risk factors include sun exposure, sunburn, fair skin, many moles, family history and a weak immune system.

Diagnosis

A doctor examines the skin and takes a biopsy.

Treatment

Treatment includes surgery, and for advanced melanoma, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and radiotherapy.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for any new or changing mole, or a skin sore that does not heal.
