Overview
Smallpox was eliminated through global vaccination. No natural cases have occurred since 1977.
Symptoms
- High fever and tiredness
- Headache and back pain
- A rash that turns into fluid-filled blisters and then scabs
- Rash most dense on the face, arms and legs
Causes and risk factors
It spread from person to person through respiratory droplets and contact with sores.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis would require specialised laboratory testing.
Treatment
Treatment would be supportive care. Vaccines and antiviral medicines are stored for emergencies.
When to see a doctor
Seek care for any fever with a blistering rash, which is more likely to be chickenpox or another infection.
