Overview
Soft tissue sarcomas can occur anywhere in the body but are most common in the arms, legs and abdomen. Early diagnosis improves treatment outcomes.
Symptoms
- A painless lump that grows over time
- A lump larger than 5 cm or deep in the muscle
- Pain if the lump presses on nerves or muscles
- Abdominal pain or swelling for sarcomas in the abdomen
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include previous radiotherapy, some inherited conditions and exposure to certain chemicals. Most occur without a known cause.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses ultrasound, MRI or CT scans and a biopsy, ideally planned by a specialist team.
Treatment
Treatment usually involves surgery to remove the tumour, often with radiotherapy and sometimes chemotherapy.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for a lump that is growing, larger than a golf ball, deep or painful.
