Overview
Most sore throats are caused by viruses and get better within a week without antibiotics.
Symptoms
- Pain or scratchiness in the throat
- Pain when swallowing
- Swollen glands in the neck
- Hoarse voice
- Fever, cough or runny nose with a cold
Causes and risk factors
Common causes are viral infections. Others include strep throat, allergies, dry air, smoking and acid reflux.
Diagnosis
A doctor examines the throat and may take a swab to test for strep throat.
Treatment
Treatment includes rest, fluids, warm drinks, salt-water gargles and pain relief. Antibiotics are only needed for bacterial infections.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if a sore throat lasts more than a week or comes with high fever. Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling or a muffled voice.
