Overview
Spasticity is common after stroke, spinal cord injury and in conditions such as cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. Treatment improves comfort and function.
Symptoms
- Stiff, tight muscles
- Involuntary muscle spasms
- Difficulty moving joints
- Pain
- Abnormal posture of limbs
Causes and risk factors
Causes include stroke, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, brain injury and multiple sclerosis.
Diagnosis
A doctor assesses muscle tone, movement and function.
Treatment
Treatment includes physiotherapy, stretching, splints, medicines, botulinum toxin injections and sometimes surgery.
