Overview
A spinal cord abscess is a medical emergency. Early treatment can prevent permanent damage.
Symptoms
- Back pain, often severe
- Fever
- Weakness or numbness in the legs
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include diabetes, injection drug use, recent spinal procedures, infections elsewhere in the body and a weak immune system.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses an MRI scan and blood tests.
Treatment
Treatment includes intravenous antibiotics and often urgent surgery to drain the abscess.

Seek emergency care for back pain with fever, leg weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control.
