Overview
Spinal cord compression can develop slowly or suddenly. Sudden compression is an emergency.
Symptoms
- Neck or back pain
- Numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms or legs
- Clumsiness and difficulty walking
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
Causes and risk factors
Causes include disc herniation, spinal arthritis, injury, tumours, infections and bleeding.
Diagnosis
An MRI scan confirms the diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause and may include steroids, surgery and radiotherapy.
When to see a doctor
Seek emergency care for new weakness, numbness in the legs, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
