Overview

Stasis dermatitis is a sign of chronic venous disease. Treatment can improve the skin and prevent ulcers.

Symptoms

  • Swelling of the ankles
  • Red, brown or purple skin
  • Itching and dryness
  • Thickened skin
  • Weeping and ulcers

Causes and risk factors

Risk factors include varicose veins, older age, obesity, previous blood clots and standing for long periods.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on examination. A Doppler ultrasound assesses the veins.

Treatment

Treatment includes compression stockings, elevating the legs, moisturisers, steroid creams and treating vein problems.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for leg skin changes or ulcers. Seek urgent care for a red, hot, painful leg.
