Overview

Strabismus is common in children and should be treated early to prevent lazy eye and protect vision.

Signs

  • Eyes pointing in different directions
  • Squinting or closing one eye
  • Tilting the head
  • Double vision in adults

Causes and risk factors

Risk factors include family history, long-sightedness, premature birth, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome.

Diagnosis

An eye specialist examines eye alignment and vision.

Treatment

Treatment includes glasses, patching, eye exercises and surgery.

When to see a doctor

See an eye specialist if your child's eyes do not look straight after three months of age. KIH can guide you to an eye specialist.
