Overview
Strep throat is most common in children. Antibiotics help recovery and prevent complications such as rheumatic fever.
Symptoms
- Sudden sore throat
- Pain when swallowing
- Fever
- Red, swollen tonsils with white patches
- Swollen neck glands
- Usually no cough
Causes and risk factors
It spreads through droplets from coughs and sneezes and close contact.
Diagnosis
A throat swab confirms it.
Treatment
Treatment is a full course of antibiotics, along with pain relief and fluids.
