Overview
Symptomatic epilepsy can start at any age. Treatment targets both the seizures and the underlying cause.
Symptoms
- Seizures that may start in one part of the body
- Altered awareness
- Staring or repetitive movements
- Convulsions
Causes and risk factors
Causes include head injury, stroke, brain infections, tumours, birth injury and brain malformations.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses EEG and brain MRI.
Treatment
Treatment includes anti-seizure medicines and, for some people, surgery.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor after any seizure. Call for emergency help if a seizure lasts more than five minutes.
