Overview
Syphilis is easily cured with antibiotics. Testing in pregnancy prevents passing it to the baby.
Symptoms
- A painless sore on the genitals or mouth
- A rash on the palms and soles
- Fever, swollen glands and tiredness
- No symptoms during the hidden stage
- Heart, brain and nerve problems years later if untreated
Causes and risk factors
It spreads through sexual contact and from mother to baby during pregnancy.
Diagnosis
Blood tests confirm the infection.
Treatment
Treatment is penicillin injections. Partners should also be tested and treated.
