Overview

A syrinx can grow over time and damage the spinal cord. It is often linked to Chiari malformation.

Symptoms

  • Neck, shoulder or back pain
  • Weakness in the arms and hands
  • Loss of the ability to feel hot or cold
  • Stiffness in the legs
  • Scoliosis

Causes and risk factors

Causes include Chiari malformation, spinal cord injury, tumours, infections and tethered cord.

Diagnosis

An MRI scan confirms the diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment includes monitoring and surgery to treat the cause or drain the syrinx.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for weakness, loss of temperature sensation or worsening neck or back pain.
