Overview

Tendinopathy commonly affects the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee and Achilles tendon. It usually improves with rest and rehabilitation.

Symptoms

  • Pain that is worse with activity
  • Stiffness, especially in the morning
  • Swelling or a lump along the tendon
  • Weakness

Causes and risk factors

Causes include repetitive movements, sport, ageing, diabetes and some antibiotics.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on examination. Ultrasound or MRI may be used.

Treatment

Treatment includes rest, ice, painkillers, physiotherapy and injections in some cases.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if pain lasts more than a few weeks or you suddenly cannot use a joint.
