Overview

Tension headaches are usually mild to moderate and not serious. They can become frequent and affect daily life.

Symptoms

  • A dull, pressing pain on both sides of the head
  • A feeling of tightness around the forehead
  • Tender neck and shoulder muscles
  • No nausea or vomiting

Causes and risk factors

Triggers include stress, poor posture, eye strain, lack of sleep, dehydration and skipped meals.

Diagnosis

A doctor diagnoses it based on symptoms and examination.

Treatment

Treatment includes painkillers, stress management, exercise, sleep and preventive medicines for frequent headaches. Avoid overusing painkillers.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if headaches are frequent. Seek emergency care for a sudden severe headache or headache with weakness, confusion or stiff neck.
