Overview

Tetanus is preventable with vaccination. It can be fatal without treatment.

Symptoms

  • Jaw stiffness (lockjaw)
  • Muscle spasms and stiffness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Fever and sweating
  • Breathing difficulty

Causes and risk factors

It is caused by Clostridium tetani bacteria found in soil and dust, entering through cuts or wounds. Unvaccinated people and newborns of unvaccinated mothers are at risk.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on symptoms.

Treatment

Treatment includes intensive care, tetanus immunoglobulin, antibiotics and wound care.

When to see a doctor

Seek care after a dirty or deep wound if your tetanus vaccine is not up to date. Seek emergency care for jaw stiffness or muscle spasms.
