Overview
Thalassaemia is common in Pakistan. Thalassaemia major needs lifelong care, while carriers usually have no symptoms. Screening before marriage or pregnancy helps prevent it.
Symptoms
- Tiredness and paleness
- Poor growth
- Enlarged spleen
- Bone changes in the face
- Dark urine
Causes and risk factors
It is inherited when both parents carry the gene. Marriage between relatives increases the risk.
Diagnosis
Blood tests including haemoglobin electrophoresis confirm it.
Treatment
Treatment includes regular blood transfusions, iron chelation and, for some, bone marrow transplant.
When to see a doctor
Couples should consider thalassaemia testing before marriage or pregnancy. See a doctor if a child is pale and not growing well.
