Overview

There are several types of thyroiditis. Some are painful and temporary, such as subacute thyroiditis after a viral illness, while others, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, are long-term.

Symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness at the front of the neck in some types
  • Early symptoms of an overactive thyroid, such as palpitations and weight loss
  • Later symptoms of an underactive thyroid, such as tiredness and weight gain
  • A swollen thyroid
  • Low mood after childbirth in postpartum thyroiditis

Causes and risk factors

Causes include autoimmune disease, viral infections, pregnancy and childbirth, and medicines such as amiodarone, lithium and some cancer treatments.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis uses thyroid blood tests, thyroid antibodies, inflammation markers, ultrasound and sometimes a thyroid uptake scan.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the type and may include anti-inflammatory painkillers or steroids, beta-blockers for palpitations and thyroid hormone replacement if the thyroid becomes underactive.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for neck pain, palpitations, unexplained weight changes or tiredness, especially in the year after giving birth.
