Overview
The temporomandibular joint connects the lower jaw to the skull in front of each ear. TMJ problems are common and usually improve with simple self-care and treatment.
Symptoms
- Pain in the jaw, face or in front of the ear
- Clicking, popping or grating when opening the mouth
- Difficulty opening the mouth fully or the jaw locking
- Headaches and earache
- Pain when chewing
Causes and risk factors
Causes include teeth clenching and grinding, stress, jaw injury, arthritis of the joint, poor bite and habits such as chewing gum or biting nails.
Diagnosis
A dentist or doctor examines the jaw movement and muscles. X-rays, CT or MRI may be used if needed.
Treatment
Treatment includes soft foods, warm or cold compresses, jaw exercises, painkillers, a night-time mouth guard, stress management and physiotherapy. Injections or surgery are rarely needed.
When to see a doctor
See a dentist or doctor if jaw pain lasts more than two weeks, your jaw locks, or you cannot open your mouth normally.
