Overview

Toxic shock syndrome can develop quickly and affect multiple organs. Early emergency treatment saves lives.

Symptoms

  • Sudden high fever
  • Low blood pressure, dizziness or fainting
  • A widespread rash that looks like sunburn
  • Vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Muscle aches
  • Confusion
  • Peeling of the skin on the palms and soles later

Causes and risk factors

It is caused by toxins from Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus bacteria. Risk factors include using high-absorbency tampons or menstrual cups for too long, skin wounds, burns, surgery and recent childbirth.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on symptoms, examination and blood tests. Swabs and cultures look for the bacteria.

Treatment

Treatment includes emergency care, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, removing the source of infection, such as a tampon, and intensive care support.

When to see a doctor

Seek emergency care for sudden high fever with a rash, vomiting or dizziness, especially during a period or after a wound or surgery.
