Overview
Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by bacteria that spread when a person with active lung TB coughs or sneezes. Pakistan has a high burden of TB. TB can be cured when the full course of medicines is taken as prescribed.
Symptoms
- A cough lasting more than two weeks, sometimes with blood
- Fever, especially in the evening
- Night sweats
- Weight loss and loss of appetite
- Tiredness
- Chest pain
Causes and risk factors
- Close contact with someone who has active TB
- A weakened immune system, including from diabetes or HIV
- Malnutrition
- Smoking
- Crowded living conditions
Diagnosis
Tests may include sputum tests such as GeneXpert, a chest X-ray and other tests depending on where TB is suspected.
Treatment
TB is treated with a combination of antibiotics taken for at least six months. It is important to complete the full course, even when you feel better, to cure the infection and prevent drug resistance.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you have a cough for more than two weeks, especially with fever, night sweats or weight loss.
