Overview
Small differences in leg length are common and usually cause no problems. Larger differences can affect walking and cause back, hip or knee pain.
Symptoms
- Limping or walking on the toes of the shorter leg
- One shoulder or hip appearing lower than the other
- Back, hip or knee pain
- Uneven wear of shoes
Causes and risk factors
Causes include conditions present from birth, injury to a growth plate, fractures that healed shorter, infections, hip problems in childhood, cerebral palsy and polio.
Diagnosis
A doctor examines the legs and measures their length. X-rays or scans give accurate measurements. In children, growth is monitored over time.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the size of the difference and may include a shoe lift, physiotherapy, surgery to slow growth in the longer leg, or limb lengthening surgery.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you notice a limp, uneven hips or a child walking on tiptoe on one side.
