Overview
Most women will have a yeast infection at some point. It is not a sexually transmitted infection and is easily treated.
Symptoms
- Itching and soreness around the vagina
- Thick, white discharge that looks like cottage cheese
- Burning when passing urine
- Pain or discomfort during sex
- Redness and swelling of the vulva
Causes and risk factors
It is caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast. Risk factors include antibiotics, pregnancy, diabetes, a weak immune system, tight clothing and perfumed products.
Diagnosis
A doctor diagnoses it from symptoms and examination. A swab may be taken for repeated infections.
Treatment
Treatment includes antifungal pessaries, creams or tablets. Keeping the area dry, wearing cotton underwear and avoiding perfumed products help prevent it.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if it is your first infection, symptoms do not improve with treatment, infections keep returning, or you are pregnant.
