Overview
Vaginitis is very common and has several causes. Finding the right cause helps choose the right treatment.
Symptoms
- Change in the colour, smell or amount of vaginal discharge
- Itching or irritation
- Pain during sex
- Burning when passing urine
- Light bleeding or spotting
Causes and risk factors
Common causes are bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections and trichomoniasis. Others include menopause-related thinning (atrophic vaginitis), soaps, douches and allergies.
Diagnosis
A doctor takes a history, examines the vagina and tests a sample of discharge.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause and may include antibiotics, antifungal medicines or vaginal oestrogen. Avoiding douching and perfumed products helps.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for unusual discharge, especially with fever, pelvic pain, a new partner or during pregnancy.
