Overview
Varicose veins develop when valves inside the veins weaken, allowing blood to pool. They are common and are often a cosmetic concern, but they can also cause discomfort and, in some cases, skin changes or ulcers.
Symptoms
- Visible bulging, twisted veins
- Aching, heaviness or throbbing in the legs
- Swelling of the ankles
- Itching around the veins
- Skin discolouration or sores near the ankle in advanced cases
Causes and risk factors
- Standing for long periods
- Pregnancy
- Obesity
- Older age
- A family history of varicose veins
Diagnosis
A doctor examines your legs, and a duplex ultrasound scan checks blood flow in the veins.
Treatment
Treatment may include compression stockings, exercise, raising the legs and weight management. Procedures such as sclerotherapy, endovenous ablation or surgery may be recommended for troublesome veins.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if varicose veins are painful or cause skin changes. Seek urgent care for a painful, swollen, red leg or a vein that bleeds.
