Overview
Vitiligo is not contagious or harmful to physical health, but it can affect self-confidence. Treatment can help restore colour in some people.
Symptoms
- White or pale patches of skin
- Patches often on the face, hands, around the mouth and eyes, and genitals
- Early whitening of hair, eyebrows or eyelashes
- Patches that may spread over time
Causes and risk factors
It is thought to be an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks pigment cells. It can run in families and is linked to thyroid disease and other autoimmune conditions.
Diagnosis
A doctor diagnoses it by examining the skin, sometimes with a special lamp. Blood tests may check thyroid function.
Treatment
Treatment includes steroid or other creams, phototherapy, camouflage make-up and, for stable patches, skin grafting procedures. Sun protection is important.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you notice pale patches of skin, especially if they are spreading or affecting your confidence.
