Overview
Vocal cord lesions are common in people who use their voice a lot, such as teachers and singers. Most improve with voice therapy.
Symptoms
- Hoarse, rough or breathy voice
- Voice tiredness
- Reduced vocal range
- A feeling of a lump in the throat
- Frequent throat clearing
Causes and risk factors
Causes include voice overuse or misuse, shouting, acid reflux, smoking and allergies.
Diagnosis
An ENT specialist examines the vocal cords with a small camera (laryngoscopy or stroboscopy).
Treatment
Treatment includes voice rest, voice therapy, treating reflux and stopping smoking. Surgery may be needed for lesions that do not improve.
When to see a doctor
See an ENT specialist if hoarseness lasts more than three weeks, especially if you smoke.
