Overview

Watery eyes are common and may be caused by irritation or blocked tear ducts. Treatment depends on the cause.

Symptoms

  • Tears running down the cheeks
  • Blurry vision
  • Sticky discharge
  • Redness or swelling near the inner corner of the eye

Causes and risk factors

Causes include dry eyes, allergies, infections, eyelid problems and blocked tear ducts, especially in babies and older adults.

Diagnosis

An eye specialist examines the eye and tear duct.

Treatment

Treatment includes treating the cause, massage in babies, eye drops and surgery for blocked tear ducts.
