Overview
Wisdom teeth usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25. Many cause no problems, but some become impacted or infected and need treatment.
Symptoms
- Pain at the back of the mouth
- Red, swollen gums around a wisdom tooth
- Bad breath or an unpleasant taste
- Difficulty opening the mouth
- Swelling of the jaw or face
Causes and risk factors
Problems happen when there is not enough space in the jaw, causing teeth to grow at an angle or only partly come through, which traps food and bacteria.
Diagnosis
A dentist examines the mouth and takes an X-ray.
Treatment
Treatment includes cleaning, mouthwash, painkillers and antibiotics for infection. Removing the wisdom tooth may be advised for repeated problems.
When to see a doctor
See a dentist for pain or swelling at the back of the mouth. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, fever or difficulty swallowing or breathing.
