Overview
Intestinal worms can cause tummy problems, anaemia and poor growth. Treatment is simple and effective, and good hygiene helps prevent reinfection.
Symptoms
- Abdominal pain and bloating
- Diarrhoea or nausea
- Loss of appetite or weight loss
- Tiredness and anaemia
- Itching around the anus
- Visible worms in the stool
Causes and risk factors
Worms spread through contaminated soil, water and food, undercooked meat, walking barefoot and poor hand washing.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses stool tests and, in some cases, blood tests.
Treatment
Treatment is anti-worm medicine. Regular deworming is recommended for children in some areas. Hand washing, safe water, wearing shoes and cooking meat well help prevent infection.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you or your child have ongoing tummy pain, poor growth, anaemia or see worms in the stool.
