Overview

Writer's cramp is a form of focal dystonia. It is not caused by overuse alone, and it can be managed with treatment.

Symptoms

  • Cramping or tightening of the hand while writing
  • Fingers curling or the wrist bending
  • Pressing too hard with the pen
  • Handwriting becoming slow or untidy
  • Symptoms that start soon after beginning to write

Causes and risk factors

The cause is not fully understood. It may be linked to changes in how the brain controls movement. Repetitive fine hand tasks may trigger it in some people.

Diagnosis

A neurologist makes the diagnosis based on symptoms and examination.

Treatment

Treatment includes botulinum toxin injections, hand therapy, changing pen grip or writing style, and medicines in some cases.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if your hand cramps or twists when writing or doing other fine tasks.
