Overview
Yellow fever does not occur in Pakistan, but travellers to affected countries need vaccination. A single dose of vaccine gives lifelong protection.
Symptoms

- Muscle and back pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Jaundice in severe cases
- Bleeding from the nose, mouth or stomach in severe cases
Causes and risk factors
It is caused by a virus spread by the bite of infected Aedes and Haemagogus mosquitoes. Unvaccinated travellers to affected areas are at risk.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses blood tests and travel history.
Treatment
There is no specific antiviral treatment. Care is supportive, with fluids, rest and hospital care for severe illness. Vaccination and mosquito bite prevention are key.
When to see a doctor
Get vaccinated before travelling to affected countries. Seek care for fever after returning from Africa or South America.
