Overview

Aesthetic surgery includes procedures such as facelifts, eyelid surgery, nose reshaping, breast surgery, tummy tucks and liposuction. Good results depend on careful assessment, realistic expectations and an experienced surgeon.

Who it may help

  • Healthy adults who want to change a feature of their appearance
  • People with loose skin after weight loss or pregnancy
  • Men with enlarged breast tissue
  • People with realistic expectations who do not smoke or are willing to stop

Before the surgery

A consultation covers your goals, medical history and examination, and the options, risks, recovery and costs. Photographs may be taken. You may be asked to stop smoking and some medicines.

During and after the surgery

Most procedures are done under general or local anaesthesia. Recovery varies from days to weeks. Bruising and swelling settle gradually, and final results may take several months.

Risks

Risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, asymmetry, numbness, poor healing and results that do not meet expectations.
