Overview
Benign soft tissue tumours, such as lipomas, cysts and fibromas, are common and harmless. They may be removed if they are painful, growing, unsightly or if the diagnosis needs confirming.
Why it is done
- A lump that is painful or getting bigger
- A lump that is uncomfortable or affects appearance
- To confirm that a lump is not cancerous
- Repeated infection of a cyst
Before the surgery
The surgeon examines the lump and may arrange an ultrasound or MRI, especially for lumps that are large, deep or growing.
During the surgery
Most small lumps are removed under local anaesthesia as a day procedure. Larger or deeper lumps may need general anaesthesia. The lump is sent to the laboratory for testing.
After the surgery
Keep the wound clean and dry. Stitches are removed or dissolve within one to two weeks.
Risks
Risks include bleeding, infection, scarring and the lump coming back.
