Overview
Many operations no longer need an overnight stay thanks to modern anaesthesia and keyhole techniques. Day care surgery reduces time in hospital and lets you recover at home.
Who it may help
- People having hernia repair or gallbladder removal
- People having surgery for piles, fissures or lumps
- People having minor procedures such as endoscopy or biopsies
- Healthy people whose conditions are well controlled
Before the surgery
A pre-operative assessment checks your health and medicines. You will be told when to stop eating and drinking. Arrange for an adult to take you home and stay with you overnight.
On the day
You arrive, have the operation and recover in the day care unit. Once you are awake, comfortable and able to drink and pass urine, you can go home with instructions.
After the surgery
Take pain relief as advised and follow wound care instructions. Call the hospital if you have heavy bleeding, fever or severe pain.
