Overview
Some digestive problems, such as heartburn and constipation, are common in pregnancy. Others, such as hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease or pregnancy-related liver conditions, need specialist care to protect mother and baby.
Who it may help
- Pregnant women with severe vomiting, heartburn or constipation
- Women with hepatitis B, C or E in pregnancy
- Women with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
- Women with jaundice or abnormal liver tests in pregnancy
What the service includes
Assessment of symptoms, blood tests, pregnancy-safe medicines, endoscopy when necessary, prevention of hepatitis B transmission to the baby and joint planning with obstetricians.
What to expect
Treatment is chosen with the baby's safety in mind. Follow-up continues after delivery when needed.
