Overview
Surgery is considered when eye drops and laser treatment do not control eye pressure, or when glaucoma is advanced. Common operations include trabeculectomy, which creates a small drainage channel under the eyelid, and drainage tube implants.
Why it is done
- Glaucoma that is getting worse despite treatment
- Very high eye pressure
- Difficulty using eye drops or side effects from them
- Some types of glaucoma in children
Before the surgery
Your eye specialist assesses eye pressure and the optic nerve and explains the surgical options.
During and after the surgery
Surgery is usually done under local anaesthesia. Frequent check-ups and eye drops are needed afterwards.
Risks
Risks include infection, bleeding, eye pressure becoming too low or high again, and cataract.
