Overview
The hand and arm have many small structures that work together. Hand surgery restores function after injuries and treats conditions that cause pain, numbness or stiffness.
Why it is done
- Fractures of the hand or wrist
- Tendon and nerve injuries
- Carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger
- Arthritis of the hand or wrist
- Congenital hand differences
Before the surgery
Your surgeon examines your hand and may arrange X-rays, ultrasound or nerve tests.
During and after the surgery
Many hand operations are done under local or regional anaesthesia as day surgery. A splint may be needed, and hand therapy is important for recovery.
Risks
Risks include infection, stiffness, nerve injury, scarring and complex regional pain.
At KIH
