Overview
Pregnancy places extra strain on the heart. Women with known heart disease, or who develop heart symptoms in pregnancy, benefit from joint care by cardiologists and obstetricians.
Who it may help
- Women with heart valve disease, including rheumatic heart disease
- Women with congenital heart disease or heart rhythm problems
- Women with high blood pressure or heart failure
- Women with breathlessness, palpitations or chest pain in pregnancy
What the service includes
Pre-pregnancy counselling, heart checks such as ECG and echocardiography, review of medicines for safety in pregnancy, monitoring through pregnancy and planning for a safe delivery.
What to expect
You will be seen regularly by both teams. A birth plan is made in advance, including where and how to deliver safely.
