Overview
Keyhole and hysteroscopic surgery can treat many gynaecological conditions with less pain, smaller scars and quicker recovery than open surgery.
Why it is done
- Ovarian cysts
- Endometriosis
- Fibroids and polyps
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Hysterectomy for suitable conditions
- Investigation of pelvic pain or infertility
Before the surgery
Tests may include ultrasound, blood tests and MRI. You will be asked not to eat or drink before the operation.
During and after the surgery
Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon uses a camera through small cuts or through the cervix. Many women go home the same day or the next day.
Risks
Risks include bleeding, infection, injury to the bladder or bowel and the need to convert to open surgery.
