Overview
Some babies are born with conditions that need an operation soon after birth. Newborn surgery requires close teamwork between surgeons, neonatologists and anaesthetists.
Why it is done
- Blockages of the bowel or food pipe
- Congenital diaphragmatic hernia
- Abdominal wall defects
- Pyloric stenosis
- Necrotising enterocolitis
Before the surgery
The baby is stabilised in the neonatal unit. Tests may include X-rays, ultrasound and blood tests. Parents are given a full explanation.
After the surgery
Babies recover in the neonatal intensive care unit, with careful pain relief, nutrition and monitoring. Parents are encouraged to be involved in care.
Risks
Risks depend on the condition and may include infection, bleeding, feeding difficulties and the need for further surgery.
At KIH
KIH's neonatal and surgical teams can assess newborns needing surgery and arrange specialised care when required.
