Overview

Some babies need extra help after birth because they are born early, are small or become unwell. The neonatal intensive care unit provides round-the-clock care by neonatologists and specially trained nurses.

Who it may help

  • Premature or low birth weight babies
  • Babies with breathing difficulties
  • Babies with jaundice, infections or low blood sugar
  • Babies who need monitoring after a difficult birth

What the service includes

Breathing support, incubators, monitoring, intravenous fluids and nutrition, phototherapy, infection treatment and support for breastfeeding and parents.

What to expect

Parents are encouraged to visit, hold their baby when possible and take part in care. The team explains progress and plans for going home.
