Overview

Some serious conditions show no signs at birth but can be treated effectively if found early. Newborn screening helps identify these conditions in the first days of life.

What is checked

  • A blood spot test for conditions such as congenital hypothyroidism and some metabolic disorders
  • A hearing test
  • A physical examination including the heart, hips and eyes
  • Pulse oximetry to check for some heart conditions

Before the tests

Screening is usually done before discharge or in the first week. Parents are told about each test.

After the tests

Most results are normal. If a result needs follow-up, parents are contacted and further tests are arranged quickly.

At KIH

KIH's neonatal team offers newborn examination and screening tests.
