Overview
Long-term blocked nose, sinus infections and nasal polyps can affect breathing, smell and sleep. Many improve with medicines, while others need surgery.
Why it is done
- Chronic sinusitis that does not respond to medicines
- Nasal polyps
- A deviated septum causing blockage
- Enlarged turbinates
- Repeated nosebleeds
Before the surgery
Assessment includes nasal endoscopy and a CT scan of the sinuses. Nasal sprays may be tried first.
During and after the surgery
Endoscopic sinus surgery and septoplasty are done through the nostrils under general anaesthesia. Most people go home the same or next day and use saline rinses afterwards.
Risks
Risks include bleeding, infection, adhesions and, rarely, injury to the eye or brain lining.
