Overview

Osteoporosis makes bones fragile and more likely to break. Treatment can slow bone loss, increase bone strength and lower the risk of fractures.

Who it may help

  • Women after menopause
  • People who have broken a bone after a minor fall
  • People on long-term steroids
  • People with low bone density on a DEXA scan

Treatment options

Treatment includes calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise, fall prevention and medicines such as bisphosphonates, denosumab or bone-building treatments.

What to expect

A bone density scan and blood tests guide treatment. Follow-up checks how you are responding and whether treatment can be paused.

At KIH

KIH's rheumatology, orthopaedic and endocrinology teams assess and treat osteoporosis.
