Overview
Children may need chest surgery for birth differences, infections or injuries. Many operations can now be done using keyhole (thoracoscopic) techniques.
Why it is done
- Lung malformations
- Empyema (infection around the lung)
- Collapsed lung
- Chest wall deformities
- Problems of the food pipe
Before the surgery
Tests include chest X-rays, CT scans and blood tests.
After the surgery
A chest drain may be needed for a few days. Pain relief and breathing exercises help recovery.
Risks
Risks include bleeding, infection, air leaks and the need for further surgery.
At KIH
KIH's thoracic and general surgery teams can assess children with chest conditions and arrange specialised care when needed.
