Overview
Children may find scans, wound repairs and other procedures frightening or painful. Sedation helps them stay comfortable and still, making procedures safer and quicker.
Who it may help
- Children having MRI or CT scans
- Children needing stitches, fracture setting or other emergency procedures
- Children having endoscopy or bone marrow tests
Before the procedure
Your child will be assessed for fitness for sedation. You will be told when they must stop eating and drinking.
During and after the procedure
Medicines are given by mouth, nose or vein. Breathing, oxygen and heart rate are monitored throughout. Children stay until they are awake and able to drink.
Risks
Risks include vomiting, temporary breathing problems and drowsiness. Trained staff and monitoring keep these risks low.
